In this blog I am going to talk about something different from the past few weeks but still related to animal welfare. The Australian bushfires have been publicised on all major global news and social media platforms. It’s devastating for the people, the landscape, but also the wildlife. We would like to bring to your attention the fires on Kangaroo Island.
Our heart goes out to the whole of Australia; the people who have lost homes, livelihoods and still have loved ones missing. There are many organisations raising awareness and receiving donations from across the world. However, one of the places most recently affected is one that we hold very dear here at Pets Playstore. Kangaroo Island is an island off the South Coast off Australia, with its closest major city being Adelaide. Many people outside of Australia have never heard of Kangaroo Island; they rely heavily on tourism to fund the conservation efforts they have across the whole island, and on the 3rd of January 2020 over a third of the island was destroyed by bushfires.
2 people died in the fire which devastated the close-knit community of Kangaroo island. Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary was damaged and conservation areas such as Flinders Chase, Stokes Bay and the Remarkable Rocks near Seal Bay was also heavily affected. Kangaroo Island now needs your help to treat the injured animals being brought into Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park from across the Island. There are many fantastic charities set up to help the animals of Australia, however Kangaroo Island is isolated from the mainland and the wildlife park desperately needs your help to treat, rehabilitate and hopefully release these animals back into the wild. Kangaroo Islands Koalas are free from the disease that is threatening all of Australia’s Koala population, and they may be needed to help repopulate the other declining populations.
Please visit the Kangaroo Island Wildlife Parks’ go fund me page and follow their Instagram page @KIwildlifepark. If you can donate even the smallest amount please do and know that all of this money is going to the animals injured in the bushfires on the island. Even £1/$1 adds up, and if you share this with others using social media each donation no matter how small will make a massive difference.
The community of Kangaroo Island has come together like only they could. We visited the Island back in 2018 and knew there was something special about it. We have always planned to return, and we urge others to do the same. Kangaroo Island relies on tourism to keep running, especially the wildlife sanctuaries and conservation areas. Kangaroo Island has been likened to the Galapagos Islands with its unique landscapes that seem to capture the whole of Australia in one 96-mile-long (155 km) Island. Where else in the world could you go where you are guaranteed to see kangaroos, koalas, echidnas, and swim with wild dolphins in their natural habitat all without impacting the environment? The naturally occurring landscape can change from beaches and coastlines to bushland and massive sandy expanses such as Little Sahara. Please help; it is truly one of the most beautifully wild (yet safe) places left out there, and the animals need our help.
For ways to see how you can help the whole of the Island as well as the wildlife parks and sanctuaries you can visit www.authentickangarooisland.com.au with details on fundraising across the whole Island and information on wanting to visit there in the future. Why not let it be your next adventure; it has something for the whole family and is the perfect destination for animal lovers on every budget. Please visit their official website for more information regarding accommodation, experiences and conservation projects.
