In this blog entry I am going to share my opinion on why you should spay and neuter your rabbits and the health benefits it can have for your rabbits and you. The first and most obvious reason is to prevent unwanted bunnies if you have a male and female bonded pair (see our other blog post on keeping buns in pairs.) If they are both unneutered then the likelihood is that they will breed and with so many rabbits in rescues needing homes it is unnecessary to keep breeding rabbits. Another reason is to prevent aggressive and hormonal behavior. During the spring female rabbits become very hormonal and territorial, even towards their bonded partners! Male rabbits can also become aggressive and they scent mark their territory; which tends to lead to messy living areas, including your home.
The most important reason though is one that not many new rabbit owners are aware of; and that is to prevent cancer, especially in females. In the wild the female rabbits reproductive system is built to be nearly constantly be producing litters to expand their warren and increase their chances of survival. If a female rabbits’ reproductive system is not constantly working then they have a nearly 60% chance of uterine cancer when they reach the age of 3 years or older. Hence the importance of spaying female rabbits, especially under the age of 4 and ideally before they reach the age of 2. This may potentially be why many people previously thought a rabbits life expectancy was a lot shorter than it actually is due to a lack of education and awareness around the subject.
Many reputable vets will offer packages that include their vaccinations and boosters and a discount off neutering and/or spaying your rabbits. Read our blog next time that will discuss the importance of finding a rabbit savvy vet and vaccinating your rabbits!
